  114. As far as I can ascertain my best DX during that opening was W5EU
  115. i.e. PA3FYM (JO22) wkd W5EU (EM12) (!!!)

  117. This is approx. 8000 km. I worked EM12-square before during a F2-opening
  118. a few years ago. The 'most favorite' locator was FN42 (New Hampshire??)
  119. and I managed to work a few VE3's too in EN93.

  166. This may be a no-brainer to you guys, but I'm a non-electronic type person
  167. with little interest in ham radio except as it may or may not affect 
  168. me or my family when practiced by others. My new neighbor just put up a 
  169. GIANT radio antenna that is, because of a slight difference in the 
  170. elevation of opur houses, exactly on a level with my upstairs bedrooms, and
  171. right at 120 feet from where we sleep. I know from the lights in her house
  172. (and my FM radio, which is suddenly being blown off the air) that she does
  173. most of her transmitting between 10pm and 2am, while my family and I sleep,
  174. right in the plane of the antenna.

  176. Is there any risk here?

  178. It also happens to be precisely between the only place I can put a TV 
  179. satellite dish, and the SE sky. Have I just lost my access to the
  180. satellites, 
  181. or will I be able to "see through" the antenna.?

  196. Ever wonder just how much RF a dummy load radiates?
  197.  
  198. I was trying out a Yaesu FT-707/FC-707 setup with a dummy load 
  199. for my parents-in-law, seeing what the alignment was like, and
  200. seeing what kind of power I could put out.  Of course, I was
  201. transmitting into the FC-707's built-in dummy load.
  202.  
  203. I went tuning around, and here's somebody at S9 + 20!  On the 
  204. dummy load!  So I waited for him to finish with his QSO, and 
  205. xmitted into the dummy load at about 25 watts, and not surpris-
  206. ingly, he answered, and we had a nice qso.
  207.  
  208. Turns out has was N3CAU, a ham living about 800 feet from my 
  209. house.  Even when he throttled down to 25 watts, he was still 
  210. a strong S9.  We exchanged cards by hand a couple of days later.
  211.  
  212. We've vowed to try it again at 1 watt or so, and this time I 
  213. want to try it into the Heathkit Cantenna...

  358. I was told that a fairly recent issue of 73 magazine tested different
  359. headsets for motorcycle helmet use.  I would very much appreciate it
  360. if someone could let me know which issue, so I can try and track it
  361. down, or give me a quick summary of what they found and recommend.  I'm
  362. presently trying to set up my motorcycle for mobile use and am preparing
  363. to buy the headset pieces for my helmet, and also starting to set up the 
  364. wiring.  A related question would be suggestions as to the circuitry that 
  365. would allow a radar detector alarm to break into the earphones even while
  366. having a QSO.

  388.     I am interested in compiling a list of all frequencies used in 
  389. North Dakota.  Included would LF, HF, VHF, UHF, etc. Also if anyone can, 
  390. please include amatuer repeater frequencies used in state.  This list 
  391. will eventually include not just the 'normal' PD/FD/SO etc frequncies, 
  392. but private businesses, amatuer freqs, and any other interesting things 
  393. that you may have heard.
  394.     Once I have completed all this compiling, I plan on posting it to 
  395. all news groups that applies for greatest dissemination and accesibility 
  396. to anyone who monitors anything.
  397.     If anyone has any frequencies thatg may be of interest to others 
  398. or is especially interesting, please email me your lists, or whatever.

  438. I got 'em, and I intend to read them and share them with friends who appreciate
  439. the value. I am not a collector of any thing except for the time it takes to
  440. enjoy something, learn from it, and pass it on. There weren't as many years as
  441. first thought, but I am greatful for what there was (abt 60 or 70 issues).
  442. What is neat is that there are a couple of 1929, 1930, etc. issues. The first
  443. one I picked up, flipped open to an article on building a xmitter, I read
  444. "The transformers in this project are not difficult to build...........", and
  445. then went on to give a lesson on how to build a transformer, giving design
  446. equations, and instructions on how to build the laminations, etc. Kind of an
  447. eye opener. I guess I'll finish that 100amp supply that I need to wind 17
  448. turns of #12 four times on the xformer....that already has a primary. Poor 
  449. baby that I am having to make my own secondary winding....

  466. weekend I spent a lot of time operating mobile.  Every time I called CQ on

  511. Oops.  I really should have been talking about square roots of the
  512. mean squared current, with that mean taken along the length of the
  513. line...but I slipped a cog, thinking, "SWR decreases as you get
  514. away from the load, and therefore the ratio of max to min current
  515. decreases, and therefore (in a blind leap) the max current decreases.
  516. Since power is lost in the line, the max current does increase toward
  517. the generator, but I think if you look at it carefully, you will indeed
  518. find that net loss decreases with increased line impedance, if you
  519. keep the conductor resistance constant and don't get the line spaced so 
  520. wide that radiation enters in or insulation loss becomes a factor.
  521. That's for a constant load resistance; it's even better if the load
  522. can be made to always match the line.

  560. For those of you who are lurking in the group and waiting for
  561. your license, I have bad news.

  563. I just talked to the ARRL VEC and they said that the current
  564. wait is 16 weeks from the time that the FCC gets the paperwork
  565. from ARRL.

  567. The VEC manager reports that there are 16,000 license actions
  568. pending at the FCC.  As reported previously there ar 1 or 2 
  569. people processing the applications once a week.
